As a seasoned second-grade teacher, my initial encounter with Illustrative Mathematics was a lot like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded – seriously confusing! My students got bored quickly because they didn't understand. However, once implemented these five tried-and-true methods in my classroom to keep my young learners excited about it, I went from feeling like a befuddled teacher to a math wizard, turning my classroom into a delightful circus of mathematical wonders!

  • Dive into Interactive Notebooks

Interactive notebooks are like a treasure trove for young learners. They allow your students to create their math journal filled with notes, drawings, and examples. Encourage them to make it their own, add some doodles and color—it's a creative way for them to take charge of their learning journey.

  • Learning through Play

Games are where the fun is at! Explore math-related games or math challenges designed just for 2nd graders. These games make math practice feel like an adventure and help reinforce important skills.

  • Celebrate Every Achievement

No victory is too small to celebrate. Whether your 2nd graders conquer a tricky problem or improve their speed in math drills, it's time for some high-fives and cheers. Positive reinforcement boosts their confidence and keeps them excited about math.

  • Use Helpful Resources

You don't have to do it all by yourself. Engaging worksheets and fun math games that can make learning easier and more enjoyable. These resources can explain things in different ways and give your students extra practice. They are also great for intervention to bridge the gap.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice

In Illustrative Mathematics, students spend more time on fewer topics. To help them feel less confused, give them lots of practice. Homework, in-class exercises, interactive notebooks and extra resources can make a big difference. The more they practice, the more they'll understand.
